Making Literacy REAL for everyone!

Words! Literacy Club

www.dictionary.com

A simple website to use which has everything you need: clear definitions, etymological information that is an excellent indicator of the diachronic progression of the word, pronunciation in IPA and links to other words that share the same root.

Resources—Online

List links to pages within your Web site or links to other Web sites on the Internet. Explain how each page or site relates to your company or organization. To add more links, copy and paste additional text boxes. To increase your site’s visibility on the Internet, ask other organizations to include a link to your site on their Web site.

“Real Spelling with Melvyn Ramsden”

This website gives you everything you need to know about Real Spelling—the foundation of any English literacy approach.  An ideal site for anyone wanting to know more about it.

askoxford.com

An excellent dictionary website for anyone learning English or for children who want to find out a simple definition of a word and where it is from. The searches are only made through the Compact Oxford English Dictionary and not the full version.

Neil Ramsden’s Word Searcher

Neil’s website provides an invaluable number of tools that support Real Spelling. The most commonly used in our clubroom is the Word Searcher which is a brilliant place to start an analysis.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

This dictionary site has a couple of informative features like the Word of the Day and Word for the Wise. Written in plain English, each word of the day is clearly explained with an example to illustrate its use.

World Wide Words—Weird Words

One of my favourite list websites, is Michael Quinon’s “Weird Words”. This is a list of some of the zaniest, lollygagging, gobbledygook you are ever likely to come across and is such fun to explore. The rest of the website is also worth a visit (click the picture to go there).

SOU Linguistics—A Resource for Parents and Teachers

Quite by chance I came upon this wonderful site by Dr. Tom Nash, Professor of English and Writing at Southern Oregon University. His very straight-forward explanations of the nature of linguistics reinforce the fact that Real Spelling really is just the truth about the English language.
